Pompeii at the Art Park
Along one of the winding paths in the Caponi Art Park a wandering visitor will find the forms of bodies and bones sculpted across a grassy hill. These intertwining forms depict the victims of Mount Vesuvius' devastating volcanic eruption nearly 2000 years ago in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. The forms of the bodies were preserved by volcanic ash and rediscovered in the 1700's. Excavation has allowed us to see into the lives of these people during the height of the Roman Empire.

The Science Museum of Minnesota's A Day in Pompeii exhibit and the Caponi Art Park recently partnered to promote the awareness of historical Pompeii and its discoveries. Visit Pompeii at the Art Park today!

Pompeii, a 150 ft long bronze relief sculpture, made up of a series of 16 panels recessed on a hillside, is an example of the Art Parkâs principle of organic unity. The hill itself is the sculpture. The bronze panels on its side animate the hill, suggesting an archaeological excavation÷only partially disclosing what the whole hill contains.
