Happy Spring friends, May is finally here, and you all know what that means... Well, yes, it is May Day and Hawaiian Lei Day, but closer to home it's the official season opening of Caponi Art Park! After a late start this spring, the trees are just starting to bud, the moss is vibrant and the birds are out in flocks. We may be tired of this wet weather, but the park loves it. ![]() The park would also love to see you at the Spring Open House this Saturday, May 3. Visit between 11am – 4pm and you can ask a Master Gardener your gardening questions, take a birding walk led by a local bird buff, experience the park and its wooded trails through a self-guided tour, enjoy light refreshments and learn more about this community treasure in conversation with the park’s founder Anthony Caponi. Words Will Collide at Teen Poetry SlamPoets in the Park teen poetry slam is just around the corner and teens are gearing up to read their poems. There may be $150 in cash prizes that they will compete for, but Poets is more about having fun. This year’s event will be entertaining for all ages; highlights include original spoken word by local teens, performances by 2006 Minnesota Individual Poetry Slam Champion Cynthia French and Michael Mlekoday (check out Michael in action), and event sponsor Heartbeat Studios' MN Timberwolves Beat Squad and freestyle break dancing. ![]() Teen poets from 2006 poetry slam Come for the art, stay for the fun! Community Service OpportunitiesCaponi Art Park is seeking individuals, families and groups who are interested in volunteering and becoming more involved with this unique community park. Those interested should attend the Volunteer Orientation or send an email to volunteer@caponiartpark.org. Volunteer positions include Event Hosts, Program Assistants, Tour Guides, Photographers, Gardening and Clean-up volunteers, etc. In particular, persons with an interest or expertise in marketing and communication are invited to apply for a seat on the Communications Advisory Committee. During its monthly meeting, this committee—chaired by a member of the park’s board of directors—will help with special events, branding, audience development and cultivation of major donors.
