Fossil

Unlike most of Caponi’s sculptures, Fossil is made from two different stones.

The sculpture was damaged in March 2016 by the rapidly changing early spring weather. Rain soaked into the soft stone and the overnight freezing and thawing caused a series of small cracks because the thin top would thaw out faster than the thick bottom of the piece. One morning the strain of the temperature difference was too much and the top popped off from the rest of the stone.
