Nugget

Caponi was a direct carver which means he worked directly on the stone and let its organic qualities and flaws influence the final design of the piece. The subject matter of Nugget is the nature of stone and the tools used to shape it. The 2-ton granite boulder had a number of weak spots. In the process of removing the poor quality stone the sculpture began to take shape and the marks left by Caponi’s tools created the distinctive pattern of the work. The contrast between the polished and rough surfaces shows how the same stone can appear different depending on how the artist treats it.
