Queen

Queen got its name because of its resemblance to a chess piece. Queen was Caponi’s first and only experiment casting in aluminum. The piece began as Styrofoam packing material because it was easy to burn out in a sand mold. Caponi did not have proper equipment to weld aluminum and he turned his haphazard welds into a design element of the work. 

In June 2020, vandals knocked the sculpture over and the piece broke along a weld. Lovegreen Industrial Services of Eagan donated its services to repair the sculpture and got it back in place quickly. The people who did the work said it was hard to mimic Caponi’s design because they couldn’t weld that badly
