Struggle of the Elements

Struggle of the Elements is made from scrap car bumpers and fieldstone. The name comes from the struggle Caponi had shaping the sculpture. As he used a torch to bend the metal the heat would move from one end to the other and undo his efforts. The texture on this sculpture is one of Caponi’s signature finishes. He thought covering the surface with stainless steel would keep the piece from rusting. This is an example of changing a practical idea into an intentional design element.
