A Conversation with Rami Kouhana

Holistic therapist and teacher Rami Kouhana first discovered Tai Chi, the millennia-old practice combining slow-flowing movements with controlled breathwork, as a young adult living in Chinatown, New York City. “There were these huge groups of people doing it, and I just started following along,” he reminisces. Over 30 years of experience later, he has devoted his career to bringing the exercise to others. “I think it’s the responsible thing to do– to help other people. That’s why I do what I do.”

This month, we are excited to welcome Rami to Caponi Art Park where he’ll host a beginner-friendly, two-week Qigong Tai Chi workshop series. “Participants will learn some beginning-level, basic practices, including exercises to open, stretch and relax the whole body, along with body alignment and posture principles that they can apply during their day to day life,” Rami tells CAP. “Tai Chi is very precise and coordinated movements with meditation integrated within it.” Tai Chi’s positive effects for our health are plenty, reducing both physical and emotional stress, all while honing focus, balance, coordination, and circulation. According to Rami, it’s never too late to start practicing and reaping the benefits of the exercise. His advice for first timers? “Be patient and stay consistent.”

“The idea behind this kind of holistic exercise is that you always have potential to continue developing yourself,” Rami explains. When it comes to exercise and movement, while “most people just think about getting strong,” there are other subtle, but crucial factors at play for overall wellbeing, such as breathing, balance, relaxation and how we carry body weight in our day-to-day life. “You don’t necessarily need to go to a gym to gain muscle. We all have usually 100 to 200 pounds of body weight that we have to manage all the time and how you do that makes a huge difference.”

Despite being the most practiced exercise in the world, Rami says Tai Chi is still misunderstood by much of the Western world. “When most people think of Tai Chi, they think of kungfu movies, but don’t really know what it is. They think it’s weird, obscure or mystical. But it’s actually very practical and scientific, an integral holistic approach. And it works.” He has the glowing testimonials to prove it, with dozens of students experiencing relief from stroke after effects to back pain to tinnitus. “I love sharing the practice. I love doing it. I love seeing others experience good results with it,” Rami shares. All skill levels are welcome to join us this September for Qigong Tai Chi under the trees at Caponi Art Park. We can’t wait to see you there!
