Set against the enchanting backdrop of Caponi Art Park’s Theater in the Woods, this outdoor spectacle revives the ancient traditions of the Oracle of Delphi through six spellbinding performances.

Rediscover the Oracle’s tale through a modern lens, as ORACLE reimagines the story of Delphi’s priestess on the fateful day Apollo lays siege to her temple. The Oracle’s voice, once a channel of wisdom and prophecy from Mother Earth (Gaea), is challenged by Apollo’s ambition. This epic tale, told from the Oracle’s perspective, follows her courageous fight to preserve her power, her legacy, and her role as a symbol of feminine strength.

The 27-member ensemble includes Emily Colay as the Oracle, Daniel Rosas as Apollo, and narrators Leviticus Martin (History) and Olivia Montgomery (Herstory). Alongside them are Gaea’s priestesses, python-daughter, Naiad messengers, and the fiery armies of Apollo and Gaea, all brought to life through an intricate interplay of dance, music, and fire.

Vox Medusa Brings ORACLE to Life at Caponi Art Park

Since 1996, Vox Medusa has captivated audiences with performances rooted in women’s mythology, movement, and social awareness. Founded by Kristin Freya while she was a dance major at the University of Minnesota, the company was inspired by the expressive and powerful storytelling of Martha Graham. Their debut performance, Jane Doe, was staged in Loring Park as part of Take Back the Night, setting the tone for their mission to bring awareness to domestic violence and survivors’ stories.

This May, with funding from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council (MRAC), Vox Medusa, in collaboration with Infiammati FireCircus, presents ORACLE, a breathtaking fusion of dance, fire, and myth. The company began developing ORACLE in 2020, but their plans were disrupted by the pandemic. Now, after years of dedication, their vision will finally come to life with six performances at Caponi Art Park’s Theater in the Woods.

For Freya, the Oracle has long been a source of fascination—a rare figure of female power in an era where women had no political or social authority. Through this performance, she and her company will explore the Oracle’s strength, wisdom, and resilience in a world that sought to control her.

Movement and Myth: A Conversation with Kristin Freya of Vox Medusa

This month, Vox Medusa will take the Theater in the Woods stage for six epic performances of their latest production ORACLE. The critically acclaimed, multi-media dance company’s performance will honor the Oracle, the powerful, divine feminine figure of Ancient Greek mythology.

Over nearly 30 years of experimental performances, Vox Medusa has told the stories of mythology and history through a women’s lens. Kristin Freya, choreographer and artistic director of Vox Medusa, says the mission of the company is “create from a female perspective, exploring women’s transformation and emotional experience,” as she finds that “myths are often built from the perspective of a male mortal or god’s journey.” Through their feminist approach to mythology, Vox Medusa also seeks to honor survivors of and spread awareness about domestic violence.

When asked about her inspiration for the show, Freya discussed how “at a time when women had no political standing or social power,” Oracles were symbols of feminine power and spirituality. In ORACLE, Freya focuses on the tale of The Oracle of Delphi, “who inhaled vapors from a sacred spring rising from a fissure in the earth to see the future.”

Freya believes mythology is a “timeless resource” from which we are able to derive knowledge about the human condition. She thoroughly enjoys collaborating with her creative team and incredibly talented dancers to bring such dynamic performances to life. As put in her own words: “The feeling of building something from nothing together, using only our creative talents, is powerful, and inspires us to grow as artists and as a team. We are a family of creatives. Our creative process is a testament to the power of exploring women’s mythology and history through dance, music, song, theatre, and fire performance.”

This love and dedication is undoubtedly apparent in Vox Medusa’s performances, with previous shows such as LABYRINTH (2014), CASTING SHADOWS (2015), RUNE (2016), MEDUSA (2017 & 2018), and EURYDICE (2021) drawing sold out audiences and rave reviews.
