“Sliding Glass Door:” The Unifying Power of Theater
A Conversation with Producer Rebecca Sorensen
For almost 20 years, theater director and educator CJ Sorensen has approached all of his actors with the same uplifting message: Theater has the power to connect and elevate communities near and far. It is with this spirit that CJ and his wife, fellow educator, and producer, Rebecca, established Firefly Players, a theatrical ensemble that seeks to provide children and families with inclusive, top-notch live outdoor performances.
For one weekend only, the Firefly Players are coming to Caponi Art Park for an action and comedy packed rendition of Robin Hood. “It’s going to be playful, funny, and high caliber. There’s going to be a lot of action, with really cool stunts and fight sequences,” Rebecca tells CAP. “Most importantly, we’re going to get at the heart of the message of how a community can support each other and itself, even when times are tough.” Among the cast is Rebecca and CJ’s daughter, Annika, and a few of her fellow colleagues in the Guthrie BFA program at the University of Minnesota.
Both educators in Eagan High School’s theater department, Rebecca and CJ have devoted their careers to enhancing the high school theater experience for both students and audiences. Rebecca says her and CJ’s devotion to teens and young adults is informed by the way that the feelings, emotions, and experiences of these groups “can sometimes get missed or dismissed, but are nonetheless immensely important.” Now expanding their focus with Robin Hood, the husband and wife duo want to show elementary aged children “that art can be for and available to them.” Not only is Robin Hood free to see, but it will also demonstrate to audiences the endless possibilities for play with everyday objects. For example, “when the actors turn around and they’re suddenly deer, their antlers are gardening tools,” Rebecca explains
Creating a world for people to enter into is at the heart of what the Firefly players do. Rebecca puts it this way: “Sometimes you read a book or watch a movie and think, oh, that’s that’s about me. It feels like a mirror, you feel like you’re being seen. Other times, you feel that what you watch or read is not about you, but a window into someone else’s story. But theater is more like a sliding glass door. It can be about you or not, but regardless you enter into the experience in a more intense, visceral way.”
To Rebecca, the sprawling woods surrounding CAP’s amphitheater will only accentuate the liveliness of Robin Hood. “We’ve always loved what Caponi Art Park does for our community and what it provides.
